Speaker Johnson and Senator Schumer Announced Spending Agreement

President Biden says he will sign the balance of government funding “immediately.”

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer released simultaneous statements on Tuesday, announcing that closed-door negotiations on a partial spending bill successfully concluded. If passed, this will be the final installment of federal financial allocations for the 2024 fiscal year.

Negotiations for the 2024 budget began in early 2023 when newly elected House legislators tried to implement deep spending cuts. Negotiations between the House and Senate slowed down dramatically, and the September 2023 deadline for the 2024 budget was repeatedly delayed through continuing resolutions.

The first of the tiered resolutions for fiscal year 2024 was resolved a week ago. Now that negotiations on the terms of the second bill have concluded, legislators are trying to quickly establish formal wording for the bill so that it can be passed by midnight on Friday.

President Joe Biden promptly welcomed the deal, stating, “The House and Senate are now working to finalize a package that can quickly be brought to the floor, and I will sign it immediately.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Speaker Johnson and representatives in the House as they consider the final appropriations for fiscal year 2024.
  • For Senator Schumer and members of the Senate as they prepare to vote on the funding legislation.
